Kaizer Chiefs’ Daniel Akpeyi was announced as the Ballers Goalkeeper of the year for which is the award for the best Nigerian goalkeeper at the Ballers Awards.
Akpeyi beat off competition from Francis Uzoho and Adamu Abubakar to walk away victorious at the awards that were held at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island on Sunday organised by Naija Footballers.
The Nigerian and Kaizer Chiefs shot-shopper has been praised and rewarded for the crucial saves, positioning and consistency he has shown at international level for his country and in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for Amakhosi.
Akpeyi was tasked with the big responsibility of replacing the injured Itumeleng Khune and he has done fairly well playing a vital role between the sticks for the much improved and impressive Chiefs side so far this season as they currently sit pretty at the top with a 9-point lead over second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.
In the process the Nigerian international has silenced his critics as there was a time when Chiefs supporters were desperate for Khune to return from injury, but now the supporters are happy with Akpeyi in goal simply because he’s done well.
The ex Chippa United man couldn’t be present at the awards and took to Instagram to give his award acceptance speech.
“I want to thank you for nominating me to be the best goalkeeper of the year and I want to thank the organizers who made this possible.”
