South African striker Darren Smith has completed a move to Veikkausliiga side FC Honka from second division club Ekenas IK.
Smith finished his first season in Europe as the league’s top goal scorer with 18 goals from 22 league starts and his outstanding performances have not gone unnoticed with the move to Honka a big step in his career as he continues to grow.
Honka play UEFA Europa League football and this season they were knocked out in the third round of qualification for the group stage.
The former SuperSport United forward left South Africa in search of first team football after struggling to break through at ‘Matsantsantsa’ and it seems that the gamble has paid off with a good first campaign abroad.
Speaking to the club’s official website the Ajax Cape Town product expressed joy at making the move saying it has always been his goal.
“When I came to Finland, my goal was to play in the Veikkausliiga, however I knew I had to go step by step. I had options for this season, but the decision to come to Honka was very easy in the end. I think Honka’s style of play fits my strengths very well,” he explained.
“In addition, of course, the place in the (UEFA European Conference League) for next season was a big factor. Honka clearly showed that they are interested in me and I immediately felt welcome in this compan,” he concluded.
Smith will now be shifting focus to playing amongst the best players in Finland and set his sights on continuing with the great run of form he finished on last season.
