Maritzburg United assistant coach Vincent Kobola has called for the inclusion of burgeoning star defender Rushine De Reuck in Bafana Bafana.
De Reuck has been one of the outstanding performers for Eric Tinkler’s resurgent Maritzburg.
The 24-year-old defender reads the game well. He has the ability to apply himself appropriately with well-timed tackles, spot on man-marking, impressive aerial abilities and proper passing.
Kobola says De Reuck has done enough to warrant a place in the national set up.
“De Reuck deserves a chance to play for Bafana because he has been consistent. They have to reward him. They can call him up to be in the Bafana fold. From there he can build on that and have motivation to keep on pushing. As for Under-23s and Olympics, I think he is ready,” Kobola says.
“He will be more comfortable because he will be playing with his peers. At Bafana, it may be hard for him to express himself and shine but at Under-23s I have no doubt that he will do well,” Kobola told FARPost.
Since he’s 24, De Reuck could be included as an over-age player for the Olympics.
During his playing days, which came to an end about two years ago, Kobola was a tough-as-nails defender. The former Cape Town City player feels De Reuck still has some work to do before he is considered amongst the best.
“I criticize De Reuck a lot so that he doesn’t think he has arrived. He is a good listener. He listens to me when I tell him, ‘you haven’t done anything. You haven’t won any cup. You haven’t played for the national team. You can’t just be good at Maritzburg only. You have to be good at the national team and also win something’. Then we can say he’s the best,” said Kobola.
Kobola is confident that the Maritzburg centreback will grow in leaps and bounds and get to ply his trade abroad.
“For me I would say he is one of the best I have seen… He has been improving since the first time I saw him. He has been improving in each and every game. He has been solid and he plays next to an experience player in Nazeer Allie. It’s a helping factor for him because Nazeer is able to guide him. In terms of talent, De Reuck has abundance. If he wants to go overseas, he still has to work hard. He has to be consistent until end of the season,” added the former Moroka Swallows defender.
De Reuck will be expected to stop Kaizer Chiefs’ marauding forwards when Amakhosi host Maritzburg at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.
