Bantwana head coach Simphiwe Dludlu has announced a 22-woman squad to take part in the 2020 U17 Cosafa Women’s Championship next month.
Dludlu is optimistic that the SA U17 Women’s team will put in a much improved performance in her second Cosafa Championship in charge as her side suffered a defeat in the final against Uganda in the 2019 edition of the tournament.
The U17 Cosafa Women’s Championship will be played from 4-14 November in Port Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay.
In preparation for the tournament, Dludlu’s team played a practice match against Banyana Banyana, which they lost 1-0.
“When you go to Cosafa you find players that are bigger and stronger and our practice game against Banyana Banyana gave us that resistance,” said Dludlu.
“And we wanted to see how they behave and analyse their mental strength. We still have some work to do but I am happy with my squad selection.”
The SA U17 Cosafa squad includes familiar faces, Jessica Wade, Nduli Yolanda and Nkhuna Nkateko. The trio were part Dludlu’s team that participated at the 2018 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.
South Africa will get their Cosafa U17 Women’s Championship underway with a clash against Zambia on Wednesday, 4 November before meeting Zimbabwe two days later and Tanzania on November 8. They will conclude their group stage matches against Comoros on November 12.
