The organizers of the annual Dondol community games have announced the suspension of the tournament with immediate effect.

The suspension follows the address by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday that all gatherings for both indoor and outdoor activities are prohibited for the next 14 days in order to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The tournament was currently at its semifinal stages and the organizers say they will be monitoring ways on how they can finish the 2020 edition or reimburse all the teams that have progressed to the last four thus far.

“To all the participating teams, supporters and all the stakeholders involved in ensuring that another edition of Dondol Annual Community is staged as has been planned all year round, we are sad to announce that the 2020 Dondol Annual Community Games has been suspended following the address by the president of the state Mr Cyril Ramaphosa last night in which our country has been put back to alert level 3 of Lockdown,” read a statement from the organizers on Tuesday.

“Amongst others things, the president has highlighted that as of 29 December 2020 all gatherings for both indoor and outdoor activities are prohibited for the next 14 days in order to curb the spread of Covid-19 that has resurged in the form of a second wave.

“Our tournament is one such activity that brings multitudes of people together in one place. Logic dictates that there is no assurance that prohibition of gatherings will be lifted after the set fortnight has elapsed,” they continued.

“The LOC will monitor proceedings as they unfold in the coming days and we will look at how we can try to finish the 2020 edition which was going to its semi-final stages at the time of gatherings prohibition. If circumstances do not allow us to finish the tournament then the LOC will be in consultation with all the sponsors to determine ways in which we can reimburse all the teams that have progressed thus far to this stage of the tournament,” concluded the statement.

This was the sixth edition of the annual football extravaganza which takes place at Makgato village outside Senwabarwana in Limpopo.
