Borussia Dortmund are out of the Uefa Champions League following a 3-1 loss to Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday evening.
The German giants got eliminated at the stage group phase for the first time since 2017.
A brace from Pedro Goncalves and a late third from Pedro Porro sent Sporting into an unassailable lead, with Donyell Malen netted a consolation in stoppage time for the visitors.
As a result of the defeat, Dortmund are now three points behind the Portuguese champions with just one group game remaining.
And due to an inferior head-to-head record, the Bundesliga side can’t leapfrog Sporting and they will have to settle for a place in the Europa League.
This is the first time Sporting reaches the knockout stage since the 2008/2009 season.
Meanwhile, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain along with Real Madrid and Inter Milan have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League after their respective games on Wednesday.
