Downs & Amakhosi progress in Nedbank Cup


Mamelodi Sundowns are in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup following their 1-0 win over SuperSport United at Loftus Stadium on Saturday night.

Sibusiso Vilakazi was on the scoresheet for the Brazilians, benefitting from a cross by Thapelo Morena in the first half, in what was a hard-fought encounter.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs struggled to get going against GladAfrica Championship bottom side Royal Eagles at FNB Stadium, but eventually ran out 1-0 winners courtesy of a goal by Lebogang Manyama.

There was one big upset on the day, at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto, where fourth division side Vaal University of Technology beat Golden Arrows 6-5 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

VUT are the only SAB League outfit in the competition.

Bloemfontein Celtic were the biggest winners on the day, with a 4-1 thumping of AmaZulu in the Free State.
