Downs & Maritzburg’s road to the TKO Final

Although Mamelodi Sundowns are the favourites on paper coming into the Telkom Knockout Final this evening, they face a Maritzburg United side that has only lost once in their last 10 matches in all competitions.

The Brazilians are undoubtedly the favourites coming into the match having scored 8 goals in their 3 Telkom Knockout matches.

Sundowns scored two against Arrows.

Sundowns hammered AmaZulu 5-0 in their last 16 match at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Pitso Mosimane’s charges faced a difficult task in the quarterfinals against a stubborn Chippa United side as it had to take a penalty shootout to progress to the semi-finals after playing 2-2 all after extra-time.

The semi-final encounter against Golden Arrows in Durban seemed a daunting task after star player Gaston Sirino was red carded, but Masandawana emerged 2-1 victorious to book a date at the 2010 World Cup arena.

Before their exceptional semi-final win against Chiefs at the Mbombela Stadium, the Team of choice had won their 2 previous knockout encounters via a penalty shootout.

Maritzburg’s last 16 match was against the 2017 Champions Wits which ended in a 3-1 penalty win after 1-1 draw in extra time.

The Team of Choice were 1-0 down until a Mlungisi Mbunjana own goal in the 50th minute gave the KwaZulu Natal side a lifeline and eventually won 4-3 on penalties to advance to the semi-finals.

A now famous brace by Judas Moseamedi saw United qualify for their first ever Telkom Knockout final in their history after a 2-1 win over Chiefs.
