Eberechi Eze has won the Crystal Palace Player of the Month award.
Since arriving at Selhurst Park at the beginning of this season, the winger has hit the ground running and established himself as one of the key players for the Eagles alongside Wilfried Zaha, Jeffrey Schlupp Christian Benteke and Jordan Ayew in the front line.
Eze has contributed three goals and three assists in 21 appearances for Roy Hodgson’s side this season and his performances in January have earned him the award after fans voted in numbers. The outcome of the polls was announced on Palace’s official website on Monday.
To scoop the award, the former Queens Park Rangers star beat off competition from Vicente Guaita and Jairo Riedewald to emerge the winner with 36% of the total vote. Guaita finished second with 19% while Riedewald received 8.5% to finish in third place.
He kick-started January with his Premier League Goal of the Month-nominated strike against Sheffield United and rounded it up with another good effort against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Playing every minute of every game in January, the youngster helped lead the Eagles to earning seven points from their five league clashes.
After netting his eye-catching solo goal against Sheffield United, Eze said he was thankful for scoring such a beauty.
“I thought I may as well take the chance and see if I can beat someone. When I got into shooting range I was thinking: ‘I’ll try my luck and see what happens and thankfully it went in.
“I know it’s a good goal. I’m grateful for the opportunity to come on, and to take my chance which was great.
“You want to come on and make an impact and be effective. We have to be ready on the bench and take our chance when it comes.”
He played 90 minutes on Monday night as they lost 2-0 against Leeds United at Elland Road. The London club was without their talisman Wilfried Zaha who was ruled out through injury.
