“I remember my first day in England when I joined Sunderland, the first club I played for. It was a difficult beginning because I came to a different country, different culture and climate without my family and friends.”
These are the words uttered by Egypt international and Aston Villa right-back Ahmed Elmohamady who arrived in England back in 2010 signing for Sunderland from Egypt’s Premier League side Enppi SC.
During his tenure at various teams in England including Sunderland, Hull City and Aston Villa, Elmohamady bagged 381 appearances with more than 40 assists and 14 goals to his name.
“Steve Bruce. He was the one who brought me here through Sunderland, then signed me for Hull City and Aston Villa. I respect Steve so much and he helped me a lot,” said Elmohamady.
“Aston Villa is one of the greatest clubs here in England and worldwide. The fans and atmosphere in Villa Park is awesome. I am pleased to be here, and I’ve spent the best times of my ten years in England with Villa.”
Elmohamady joined Villa in 2017 from Hull City.
The 32-year-old Egyptian wants to end his career in England where he is now well settled with his wife and two kids, Malek and Nejma.
“I wanted to make a family ever since I came here to settle as early as possible. I’ve been here in England for a long time and I am looking to end my career here too, to be the first Egyptian player to finish their career in England.”
Elmohamady went on to explain how beneficial it is for Egyptian national team to have the likes of Mohamed Salah, Mahmoud Trezeguet and Ahmed Hegazi playing in England.
Elmohamady says his best moment in England was when he helped Aston Villa gained promotion to Premier League.
“When you see the joy in the fans’ eyes, you realise how much they wanted it. It’s my best moment here for sure,” he said.
“I’ve played with a lot of great players like John Terry and Jack Grealish. But for me Jack is the best because he is brilliant and can make the difference at any time,” added the former Hull City defender.
The Egyptian international rates former England star player Eden Hazard and now Real Madrid midfielder as the best player he has played against in England.
“Hazard. He was one of the toughest and he is so talented. Also, Ashley Cole when he was in his prime at Chelsea,” concluded Elmohamady.
