SD Eibar coach Ike Dorronsoro is full of praise for Thembi Kgatlana.
This is after the Banyana Banyana forward made a big impact at the Spanish club since signing from SL Benfica at the start of the new season.
Kgatlana has scored eight Primera Division goals this campaign including goals against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and her latest strike coming against Sevilla in a 3-1 loss.
Thanks to her tenacity and blistering pace that’s complimented by ruthless finishing, the Gunsmiths have been a force to be reckoned with this season in Spain.
Dorronsoro’s side comfortably sits in 10th position on the log with 21 points from 17 games.
This is a good position considering that the club has just returned to the top flight for the first time in nine years.
Kgatlana is one of the best female footballers in Africa and if she continues to do well she might be on course for another CAF African Women’s Player of the Year award. She won the prestigious award back in 2018 after doing well with the national team and impressing at club level.
Last weekend’s goal against Sevilla was the 24-year-old’s third consecutive strike for the club. She now has an overall contribution of 13 goals having bagged eight goals and assisted another five strikes for Eibar.
Speaking to the media this week, Dorronsoro had nothing, but praise for the South African international hailing her as a benchmark player for the club.
“She is the benchmark player for us. There’s a lot of talk about her and I think that’s good for both her and the team. She is a benchmark player not only because of the goals she scores.
“She is a player who is not selfish, who squeezes, who works a lot without the ball.”
Banyana Banyana veteran defender Noko Matlou has also come in and done well for Eibar. Since making her debut, the 35-year-old has become a regular member of the club’s starting XI and helped to keep a few clean sheets.
The coach has deployed as a centre back and also as a defensive midfielder in the past few games because of her versatility.
