Ivorian forward Nicolas Pepe produced 2 assists and scored 1 goal as Arsenal hammered Newcastle United 4-0 in an English Premier League encounter on Sunday at Emirates Stadium, London.
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta says Pepe made all the difference as the attacking player produced his best performance since joining the ‘Gunners’.
“We just need consistency from him (Pepe). Wide talented players in this league are not easy to get because obviously the most difficult thing to do is create things, but we’ve said some things and we need Nico to maintain game by game,” said Arteta.
“He knows that and it’s the way he was applying himself defensively in a few moments, he was top drawer. That’s what he wasn’t doing in the past and when he does that, the rewards in the other box come. He made a difference,” added the Arsenal coach.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (54′), Pépé (57′), Mesut Özil (90′), and Alexandre Lacazette (90 +5′) all found the back of the net as Arsenal won their first game in 5 matches to move to 10th place on the log standings with 34 points, 3 clear of 13th-placed Newcastle.
“To close the gap to the top teams, we had to turn the draws into wins – today was the first opportunity to do that and we’ve done it,” admitted Arteta.
Chelsea will tackle Manchester United in the only Monday EPL fixture at Stamford Bridge, London. Kickoff at 22:00.
