Eswatini FA executive member in bribery scandal

An Eswatini Football Association executive member has been caught in a bribery scandal.

The official, whose name is deliberately withheld for ethical reasons, is said to have accepted E5 000 from Botswana officials, who heavily assaulted Sihlangu covid-19 Compliance Officer Gcina Dlamini.

According to Swazi Observer, Dlamini suffered a serious eye injury and was even spotted during his team Mbabane Highlanders’ MTN Premier League match against Tambuti at the Mayaluka Stadium wearing a medical eye patch.

The incident took place during the 2021 COSAFA Cup Senior Championships when Sihlangu played Botswana in their last group match in Gqeberha.

A source close to the matter told the publication that money was given to the official after Dlamini was beaten up by the Botswana officials during halftime for unknown reasons.

“An EFA official was given E5 000 by Botswana officials in order for him not to report the assault incident of the compliance officer to the COSAFA executive committee.

He agreed not to report the matter and took the money after the game. Unclear “It is still unclear whether the injured official got a cut of the money. He returned home injured and never went to the hospital while still in South Africa,” the source said.

Sihlangu finished the annual tournament in third place and returned home with a bronze medal after beating Mozambique in the 3rd/4th place playoffs on penalty shootouts.
