Former FC Barcelona superstar Samuel Eto’o believes Liverpool forward Sadio Mane could have won the 2019 Ballon D’or award if he was from Europe or South America.
Lionel Messi claimed his sixth Ballon D’or in France earlier this month with Senegalese star Sadio Mane finishing fourth on the podium behind Liverpool teammate Virgil Van Dijk and Juventus poster boy Cristiano Ronaldo despite Mane helping Liverpool clinch the UEFA Champions League title last season which raised question marks regarding the selection process.
“If Sadio Mane wins the Ballon D’or or finishes in a better place then fourth position nobody will disagree because he deserves it, he played very good last season but Messi is Messi he’s not normal,” Eto’o said.
“Messi won because everybody in South America voted for him and Van Dijk is second maybe because all the Europeans voted for him and now the African Journalists did not vote for Mane and there is a big problem this is why black people have a problem with black people,” said the former Real Madrid forward.
The first thing about racism, it’s not white on black, racism is black on black that is a big problem everybody speaks about racism on white and black but nobody speaks about black on black that is crazy this is the reality. In Africa the problem is we do not support another black person so he can be on the podium, this is not fair this is not good for black people,” added Eto’o.
The four-time African Footballer Of the Year announced his retirement from football aged 38 after an illustrious career which includes three UEFA Champions League titles.
