Ex-Ajax star Gerald Takwara linked to Chippa

Former Ajax Cape Town midfielder Gerald Takwara is on Chippa United’s radar with indications that his club Ngezi Platinum Stars is holding out for an improved offer from the Port Elizabeth outfit.

Takwara reportedly has eight months left on his contract and, according to reports, the former Zimbabwe youth international has agreed personal terms with the Chilli Boys.

The 26-year-old was in the books of Ajax for a season and a half before cutting ties with the club over a salary disagreement at the end of the 2018/19 season. Ngezi secretary general, Cloete Munjoma, confirmed the gritty midfielder was in South Africa awaiting his clearance to join Chippa.

“For starters, we did not clear Gerald (Takwara) to go to South Africa. He is our player, and we don’t even know how he ended up in South Africa,’’ Munjoma told a Zimbabwean daily, Herald. He said it was “confusing” how their player ended up in South Africa. However, he revealed that Chippa United had since communicated with them requesting for his clearance.

“There is definitely no way we can stand in the player’s way but, look, Gerald remains our player and we have been honouring our contractual obligations, paying him his dues, just like all of our employees. But, we cannot let him go for free. He is our investment, and we have since told Chippa United to come up with a reasonable offer, but they haven’t come back to us as yet. We bought the player last year. He is still ours and there is no way he can join another team for free. That doesn’t make any business sense,” Munjoma added.

Takwara, affectionately known as The General, is no stranger to the South African game after making 23 appearances across all competitions during his 18-month stint with the Urban Warriors.

The no-nonsense defensive midfielder is known for his no prisoner tackles on the opposition.

Chippa recently parted ways with the Zimbabwean duo of Kelvin and Elvis Moyo, who are twins. The two claimed they were axed for demanding their signing on fees.
