After completing his move to Danske Bank Premiership side Waterford FC, South African midfielder Katlego Mashigo has opened up about his goals this season.
Mashigo recently signed a one-year deal with the Irish club from Bohemians FC. The 20-year-old is looking to start playing regular first team football and it is said that coach Kevin Sheedy is one of his biggest admirers.
Speaking to this publication, the Soshanguve-born youngster said it’s been great so far and he is settling in very well at his new home.
“I have really enjoyed my start at Waterford so far. It’s a new challenge for me and I’m grateful to the gaffer for giving me the opportunity to play for such a massive club here in Ireland.
“Pre-season has been tough, but enjoyable. The boys have made me feel welcome and I’m back enjoying my football. I can’t wait to get going now on Friday for our first league game against Drogheda.”
Knowing that he has only been given one season to impress at the club, Mashigo has given himself goals that he needs to achieve to earn a long-term deal at Waterford.
“My targets this season is to make as many appearances as possible and have an impact on the pitch when I get the opportunity to cement my place within the team. My target every season is always goals because they are what helps win football matches so l will definitely be looking to add more goals to my game.
“It would be also a massive privilege to represent the South African squa. I was involved last year and it was an unbelievable experience and an honour to represent my country.”
Mashigo left South Africa with his parents at a very young age and moved to Ireland.
He harnessed his skills at St. Kevin’s Boys before getting an opportunity to join English League One side, Fleetwood Town. After a few seasons at Fleetwood, the central midfielder returned to Ireland to join Bohemians where he continued his development before joining Waterford now.
“To finally sign my first professional deal and get my first taste of first team football in the top flight in Ireland is something I’ve always dreamed of and I just cant wait to get going. Again, I just want to thank the gaffer for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to show I’m good enough for this level.”
