A local football team from Ha-Kutama Village under the Vhembe district in Limpopo were involved in a fatal accident that left two of their players dead and 20 injured on Saturday.
Tshikhodobo Barcelona (In red, main picture) were returning from a local football tournament, organised by local teams when an overloaded bakkie they were travelling in overturned along the Tshikwarani public road at about 18:30.
It is alleged that the driver of a Ford Ranger that was transporting the players lost control of the vehicle.
One player aged 12 died on the scene while the other aged 11 succumbed to injuries upon arrival at the hospital and the other injured boys were conveyed to Louis Trichardt Hospital for treatment.
Limpopo Police have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened following the incident.
“On arrival at the scene, the police found some of the injured boys but were told that others, including the driver have already been taken to hospital. These were also later transported to the hospital. The cause of the accident will be determined by the unfolding police investigation,” Police Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said in a statement.
SAFA Vhembe, as well as the Makhado Local football association (LFA) have indicated that they were unaware of the incident or the tournament as their football programme has yet to commence.
The SAFA SAB Regional league and LFA promotional leagues are expected to begin in the first week of April.
