Four Algerian female match officials have broken new ground with their appointment to referee in a senior men’s league encounter on Saturday.
It is for the first time in history that an all-female refereeing team will take charge.
The officials for the Ligue 2 clash between ES Ben Aknoun and RC Kouba are Lamia Athmane, Asma Ouahab, Samira Meliani and Ghada Mahat.
“For the first time in the history of Algerian football, an all-female officiating crew has been appointed to referee a senior men’s league match,” reads the statement.
Back in November 2020, The final of the Algerian Super Cup between USM Algiers and CR Belouizdad saw the presence for the first time of an international female referee, in this case Athmane as the fourth official.
