As the African continent join hands in celebrating Africa Day today, former Mamelodi Sundowns player Roger Feutmba has also sent a special message to football supporters in celebrating the special day.
The former Indomitable Lions midfield general spent four years at Sundowns in the late 90s.
In a Video message this afternoon, the 51-year-old emphasized the importance of Unity
“I worked in this beautiful land (South Africa) many years ago and I was welcomed by my teammates who showed me a great amount of love,” he said.
“As Africans we are experiencing a very difficult time with COVID-19 which has destroyed many lives all over the world. Our Leaders have put in place many measures so let us respect them. What Unite is football, Africa is what brings us together and together we can beat the coronavirus. I wish you all happy Africa Day,” he said.
Feutmba took the opportunity to reflect on his time at Masandawana and applaud the current Sundowns team and supporters for raising the flag even higher.
“As I always say, no matter how great you can be as an individual, football is a collective game and as a team we managed to achieve a lot together. Also the fact that the Sundowns team then was characterized by a strong wonderful spirit. We laughed together, we cried together, we supported each other in difficult times and that gave us strength to go out there and get the results we wanted,” said Feutmba.
“I also have to take the opportunity to congratulate the current Sundowns team who are doing immensely well by taking the image of Sundowns very high. To build and create a successful club like Sundowns you need a fantastic management with a great leadership, quality coach, and great quality players but there is another important part of the family and that is the supporters.
“I am using this opportunity to say to all Sundowns supporters thank you very much for the massive support you gave us then and to the fantastic one you are giving to the new generation of Sundowns today,” concluded the man affectionately knows as the General.
During his stay at Sundowns, Feutmba won the Absa Premiership twice, Nedbank Cup, as well as the PSL Players’ Player of the Season during the 1998/99 season.
