As it is the case every season, all English Premier League (EPL) clubs have submitted a list of 25 players for the new season, including all U-23 players that would also be registered in line with the Premier League requirements.
Five South African players have been registered by their respective Premier League clubs for the 2020/21 season, those players are:
- BRADLEY CROSS
Having just joined Newcastle United on a free transfer, Cross has been named in the club’s U-23 team for the season. Cross qualifies to play in England through his father who holds dual citizenship for South Africa and England.
The left-footed centre back has already made his U-23 debut as Newcastle beat Fulham in the English Premier League 2 this past weekend.
- KHANYA LESHABELA
Probably the one player likely to make his senior team debut soon for Leicester City with manager Brendan Rodgers especially wanting him to remain at Leicester for the season.
Rodgers appears to be a big fan of the midfielder and has admitted a few times that he believes in the players’ abilities. Leshabela has played every minute for Leicester’s U-23 side so far this season and will have to always be ready for his opportunity.
- NIKOLA TAVARES
The 21-year-old Cape Town-born defender has been out in the past few months due to injury, but he remains the captain of Crystal Palace’s reserve side.
Tavares made the bench of the senior team in the league on a few occasions last season but is yet to feature for the ‘Eagles’.
- MAX MCMILLAN
18-year-old striker Max McMillan has been making strides with Leeds United since joining their youth ranks as a six-year-old.
The forward has recently been training with the first team under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa who is one of the best technicians in world football today. Since emerging as the top scorer of the U-18 side the striker was promoted to the U-23 development squad.
- KGAOGELO CHAUKE
The central midfielder’s year keeps getting better having already signed his first professional contract with Southampton in January and been training with the first team since March.
Chauke featured in a pre-season friendly against Fulham showing the faith that coach Ralph Hasenhuttl has in him. Southampton has a strong policy on youth promotion and should Chauke keep doing well, his debut might not be far.
