Maritzburg United were full value for their 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Team of Choice reached the final and will take on Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium on December 14.

Tiyani wa ka Mabasa picks out some talking points from the clash in Mpumalanga…

Never judge a book by its cover

Judas Moseamedi looked heavy, if anything, but he nonetheless gave the Chiefs defence a lot of problems with his runs. The one resulted in the goal when Chiefs centre back Daniel Cardoso made a costly error by playing a short pass to his goalkeeper, Bruce Bvuma and Moseamedi pounced, and rounded off the keeper, to draw first blood.

Cardoso was exposed

Usually reliable, centre-back Cardoso had a match to forget, with Moseamedi giving him a tough time. Not only did he make the costly error that led to the goal, but Cardoso’s overall defensive work was nothing to write home about. He looked out of sorts on the day.

De Reuck deserves a pat on the back

Rushing De Reuck was solid for Maritzburg.

Central defender De Reuck proved tough to beat for the better part of the match, as he has been this season.

Numbers don’t lie…

Maritzburg had six shots on target in the first half, while Chiefs had one. In the second half, Chiefs were left to chase the match, but risked being caught on a counter, which made life difficult for them. It led to chances being created either side resulting in a balanced affair in the second half.

Bvuma deserves some credit

As much as Chiefs lost, their keeper Bvuma did all he could to keep them in the game. Faced with an erratic Chiefs defence, Bvuma had to make some crucial saves, but in the end Maritzburg had the last laugh.
