Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been named as the club’s first technical director.
Fletcher rejoined the Red Devils as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom staff in January 2021.
He will report to John Murtough who joined the side when David Moyes’ was a manager in 2013. Murtough is described as ‘a fixer’ by club sources, having been involved in recruitment, and has proved to have the skills required to run the club from the training ground.
After showing Jose Mourinho the door in December 2018, the club said they would make a director of football a priority.
“We are moving in the right direction and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Ole and his coaching team, and now with John as the football director, to help bring young players through and further develop the football side of the club,” Fletcher said.
However, the former Scotland midfielder has previously put on records that he lacked the experience for such a role, but it is understood that has stolen the heart of senior figures at Man United.
