Foster tests positive for Covid-19

Portuguese top-flight side Vitoria Guimaraes has confirmed that South African striker Lyle Foster has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss tonight’s league clash against Santa Clara.

The club released a statement stating that Foster and two of his teammates will miss the game due to this development “Jonas Carls, Eesah Suliman and Lyle Foster are low for this match (vs Santa Clara), after having tested positive for the SARS-COV-2,” the statement read.

Since arriving at the Portuguese club, the former Orlando Pirates attacker has had a tough time struggling with injuries and sickness. His tribulations have affected his performances at the Primeira Liga club.

He will now undergo a period of 10 days of self-quarantine before another round of tests is conducted and he is given the green light to join the rest of the team in full training.

In the midweek tie against SL Benfica in the Portuguese Cup, he was introduced after 70 minutes of the match and tonight’s encounter against Santa Clara was going to be his chance to get more minutes under his belt.

It has not been a smooth transition for the Bafana Bafana striker since moving to AS Monaco in 2019 as he has struggled to hit the ground running so far. Guimaraes signed him on a five-year-deal which shows that he is a long-term project at the club for the next few seasons. The team is in a rebuilding phase after most of its prominent players left for bigger clubs in Portugal.

The likes of Moussa Marega (now at FC Porto), Bongani Zungu (now at Glasgow Rangers) and Francisco Soares (now at Tianjin Teda) are among some of the notable names who formed part of a team that had taken Guimaraes to better heights in the last five years.

The attacker is now likely to only return to action in the last weekend of December should all results clear him to be negative after the quarantine period.
