Galeshewe’s Football Foot Soldier

‘You cannot talk youth football development in the Northern Cape without mentioning ‘Spondosi’, remarked Bradley ‘Suorise Ralani, the current Cape Town City winger.

‘Spondosi’ that he is referring to is none other than Coach Kagiso Matile, the talented youth coach referred loosely in the Diamond City as ‘Coach Spondosi’ or ‘Coach Spakes’.

This Galeshewe Football Soldier has dedicated his life to the emancipation of the youth game in the province and has largely been credited for delivering some of the best players to have come out of the Frances Baard Municipality.

FARPost’s Technical Study Group (TSG) takes an interesting look into the history and the work of Coach Spondosi.

1. Who is Coach ‘Spondosi’?

This vibrant and dedicated youth football lieutenant was born Kagiso Matile, on the 4th April 1975. Together with his brother, was raised by a single mother who provided the necessary platform for him to be a man.

After attending school in Kimberley, he ventured into youth coaching, and ironically he was mentored by the former Kaizer Chiefs legend, ‘Pro Pilane (May his soul Rest In Peace).

2. Youth Football Mentoring

As earlier indicated, Coach Spakes was carefully nurtured and groomed by the legendary Pilane. ‘Prokkie’ as Coach Pilane was known in the Kimberley Football Circle, was a qualified SAFA Instructor and in charge of the then Griqualand West Technical Programme.

‘Prokkie’ identified the willingness and the commitment from Matile, and set out to develop him into a youth coach for the province. The rest as you will observe is history, as Coach Spakes continued with the legacy of Pro Pilane.

3. Basotho Tigers project

From the warm hands of Pro Pilane, Matile then joined the project Basotho Tigers. Basotho Tigers is one the most successful teams to come out of the province and have cemented Kimberley in the map through its production of coaches, players and administrators.

At Tigers, he teamed up with Coach Panyaza Muchanga and Lentikile ‘Spearman’ September in running a successful Tigers youth programme. September was the senior team coach, whilst both Muchanga and Matile focused on the youth development.

Some of the players nurtured by Matile and Muchanga from the Tigers development include:

• Anthony Julies
• Tambai Julies
• Suprise Ralani, pictured above
• Tshepo Modise
• The late Henyekane brothers (Richard and Joseph). May their souls Rest In Peace
• Lebogang Saul
• Thato Mokeke

4. International production

A lot people in South Africa give credit to Farouk Khan/Stars of Africa for developing and nurturing the talents of Ralani and Thibang Phete. But the big question is, who spotted them first and accelerated their progress to Khan?

Coach Spakes orchestrated their moves to go on trial at the Joburg-based academy, and today Phete plays for Bafana and is flourishing in the Portuguese Primera League.

Ralani continues to dazzle everyone in the PSL and his trickery, technical proficiency and 1v1 attacking impetus were all championed by Matile and Muchanga.

5. Youth success

Coach Matile is a serial winner at youth and school level. Over the years he has occupied various positions with amateur football as Coach of Boys High School, Northern Cape Provincial Coach and FNB LFA Lead Coach for the last 3 years.

His coaching success include:

• Local winner of Coca Cola U17
• Winner of National FNB U15 Cup
• Winner of De Beers Champions League

6. Conclusion

The Provincial Sports Leadership have at last nominated Matile for an award. For his football cadre work and selfless dedication to youth football, the time is surely now for him to be honoured.
