Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen has opened his goal account for Napoli in their impressive victory against Atalanta over the weekend.
The 21-year-old complemented his teammates’ efforts after finding the back of the net in the 43rd minute of the encounter.
His goal came after Hirving Lozano had netted a brace and Matteo Politano scored once earlier in the opening half of the match.
Osimhen controlled David Ospina’s long ball before beating Marco Sportiello with his fine effort, which ultimately rendered Sam Lammers’ second-half strike a mere consolation for Atalanta.
The Blues boss Gennaro Gattuso was delighted and showered praise on the Super Eagles star after the game.
He told the club’s official website: “I’m happy for Chucky’s brace, but Osimhen’s goal makes me happy because he hadn’t scored so far and he deserved it for the hard work done for the team,” said Gattuso.
“He was my wish and I thank the President for having satisfied me. It wasn’t easy but we have bought a player who is very important to us,” he added.
The former Lille striker started the season well having assisted a few goals but had not scored a goal yet for Napoli until this past weekend.
Osimhen has had such an interesting journey from being a reject in Belgium due to his health to setting Ligue 1 in France alight and now starting well in Italy under coach Gattuso who has been showing so much faith in him since his arrival from France.
In three games, the former Charleroi striker has scored a single goal and assisted a further strike for Napoli in the league so far.
