A match between Jomo Cosmos and Moroka Swallows (Swallows FC) has historically been one of the fixtures to look forward to in the domestic football calendar.
Who can forget the thrilling 2003 SAA Supa8 in Durban when Ezenkosi won 3-2 with the likes of Manuel ‘Tico Tico’ Bucuane, Lovers Mohlala, Andrew ‘Jaws of Life’ Rabutla, Russel Mwafulirwa and Avril Phali on their side?
The Dube Birds on the other hand had the likes of the late Dennis Lota, George Hummel, Keryn Jordan, Greg Etafia, Gary Macnab and Lucas Sebona.
But that has sadly changed with both teams a former shadow of themselves plying their trade in the second tier of SA football, the GladAfrica Championship.
They two teams will now meet in a League match at Giyani Stadium on Sunday at 3pm, for the first time since May 2015, the day Swallows were relegated from the Absa Premiership.
Former Cosmos captain Andrew Rabutla says there has always been tension when the two sides meet.
“There was always tension when we play Swallows probably because the teams are from the same place (Soweto),” Rabutla explained to FARPost.co.za.
“Remember when they got relegated, we are the ones who beat them, and their supporters where not impressed. There has always been this tension. But things have changed now but hopefully they will bounce back to the top division,” said Rabutla.
Another unforgettable match between the two teams was in October 1998 when six players from Swallows were struck by lightning forcing the match to be called off with the Dube Birds leading 2-0 with 11 minutes to go at the George Goch Stadium.
The late former Moroka Swallows’ midfielder Jaconia ‘The Bull’ Cibi, was also banned from soccer for four months for beating up a match official with a water bottle during a Super Bowl match at Rustenburg’s Olympia Stadium between the two teams in 2001.
