Uthongathi hopes of promotion were dealt a blow as they were held to a 1-1 draw in a GladAfrica Championship encounter at Randburg Rugby Stadium on Wednesday while Jomo Cosmos kept their survival chance alive with a 2-1 victory over Royal Eagles at the Johannesburg Stadium.
‘The Cane Cutters’ took the lead in the fourth minute of the game through Celimpilo Ngema but a lapse in concentration saw Mbombela score the equaliser in regulation time.
Meanwhile, a win for 14th placed ‘Ezenkosi’ against almost relegated Eagles saw them move within two points behind 13th and 14th placed TS Sporting and Mbombela with three games remaining.
“I am feeling bad with the result but the boys tried everything, they followed the instructions,” said Uthongathi coach Pitso Dladla after his side’s eighth successive draw.
“It is a lesson that if you get chances even if you are leading because there were chances created to make the score 2-0 but we didn’t bury those chances,” added Dladla.
In other results, Free State Stars hammered promotion hopefuls Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) 3-0 at Sturrock Park while TS Galaxy and Cape Umoya United played out to a 2-2 draw at the Wits Rugby Stadium.
