Mashaba: We want GladAfrica to be a unique league

GladAfrica Group Chairman Noel Mashaba has made it known that their goal is to ensure that the GladAfrica Championship it’s a competitive league that has its “own identity”.

Mashaba along with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza unveiled the second-tier league trophy on Wednesday evening at the SuperSport Studios in Johannesburg.

The 2019/20 GladAfrica champions will walk away with a 3 million-rand prize money and will gain automatic promotion to the Absa Premiership as well as lift the ‘majestic’ trophy inspired by the African calabash on 30 August.

According to Mashaba, the brand new GladAfrica Championship trophy was forged by 10 artisans, over 150 hours, using a combination of traditional skill and leading design technology and is the crowning glory of the league’s pursuit of excellence.

“We wanted to show what GladAfrica is, what we see from the league, I don’t discount the prestige of being promoted to the PSL, is quite valuable for the club and I understand that but what we want to see is the GladAfrica Championship being a unique league of its own,” said Mashaba.

“And for it to get its own identity and this is the first step of giving it its own identity, is not a second citizen to someone else.

“As much as there is a prestige to be at the PSL and GladAfrica Championship will remain as a getaway to the PSL but what we wanted to give the teams is something to look forward to and this is for the teams in the GladAfrica Championship,” added Mashaba.

The PSL Chairman Khoza said their partnership with GladAfrica is an exciting relationship as it celebrates the African story of excellence.

“We must thank GladAfrica for being part of our family. We know they are strong in engineering services and you can see that this new trophy is as a result of attention to detail. It is something to be proud of.

“This current season in the GladAfrica Championship has been very exciting and unpredictable and this has always been the strength of our League,” concluded Khoza.

GladAfrica were confirmed as the new title sponsors of the First Division last year in August for the next five years.
