Antoine Griezmann was not in a good mood after Barcelona threw away the lead twice on their way to a 3-2 defeat by Athletic Bilbao following extra time in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday evening with Lionel Messi getting sent off for the first time in his Barca career.
The Frenchman’s brace looked to have sealed the trophy for the Spanish giants but Óscar de Marcos and Asier Villalibre scored goals that saved the game before Inaki Williams’ strike three minutes into extra time secured the trophy for Bilbao
A furious Griezmann criticised Barcelona’s lack of leadership in defence as Messi lost his temper at the end of the contest reacting to a late challenge from Villalibre by swiping his hands across the back of his opponent.
“How do you think we are?” Griezmann replied when asked how Barca felt after losing a final.
“We’re screwed, angry, upset. When you lose a final, these are all the bad feelings you have.
Barca have been struggling to defend dead ball situations and they are currently missing the presence of star defender Gerard Pique, who is likely to be out until March with a knee injury.
“Athletic pressed very well. They gave everything until the last minute, and then what happened, happened. We have made mistakes in our strategy and we’ll have to work on it during the week,” added Griezmann.
“We didn’t defend well, we didn’t communicate on set-pieces, important little details like when the ball is cleared or when we need to push out, someone needs to be shouting.”
