Sam Edozie has been making headlines for the right reasons in England.
The youngster has been on the rise at English Premier League side Manchester City where he has been turning heads since signing from Millwall last year.
His performances with the club’s reserve team have earned him a call-up to the senior squad for pre-season where he has been scoring goals and impressing manager Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola is delighted by the manner in which the 18-year-old and his fellow youngsters have stepped up to the demands of senior football during pre-season.
Edozie was a key member of City’s Development Squad’s 2020/21 Premier League 2 triumph, and he has found the net in each of their three friendly matches leading up to the 2021/22 campaign.
After making an impact from the bench in the opening victory over Preston North End, Edozie was handed a starting berth against both Barnsley and Blackpool, linking up with Benjamin Mendy down the left flank.
And while the Spaniard(Guardiola) has called for people not to get too carried away by his impact, he also heaped praise on the youngster after another stand-out performance against the Seasiders (Blackpool), in which he opened the scoring after less than three minutes into the game.
“As a young talent, having a special quality, a guy who gets to the box with intention to score a goal, it’s so important for wingers,” he pointed out.
“He’s an incredible young player with good pace.
“But we have to be patient with him. He had minutes and played good and this is important.”
It is unclear whether the former FC Barcelona mentor will immediately include the winger in his team for the first Premier League games, but he has raised his hand for selection going into the new season.
