A second-half strike from midfielder Fortune Makaringe gave Orlando Pirates a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in their DStv Premiership match at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday night.
Makaringe produced a moment of magic in the 62nd minute as he ghosted past three defenders along the edge of the box before unleashing a fine shot into the bottom corner of Jackson Mabokgwane.
‘The Buccaneers’, though, had been wasteful in the match- blunt in front of goal, having created a lot of scoring opportunities that frustrated coach Josef Zinnbauer.
Makaringe walked away with the Man of the Match award for his effort.
Celtic, who absorbed most of the pressure, would have been satisfied if they had walked away with a draw, which would have been a credible result for the Bloemfontein outfit having lost their captain Ndumiso Mabena as he was sent off in the first half for a reckless tackle on Linda Mntambo.
Meanwhile at Harry Gwala Stadium, Maritzburg United beat Black Leopards, thanks to a late strike form Thabiso Kutumela strike from the spot.
