Stellenbosch FC endured a 1-0 frustrating defeat at the expense of Maritzburg United in their DStv Premiership encounter at Danie Craven Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The visitors were lucky not to fall behind as the hosts started the game like a house on fire in the first-half of the game, pushing forward in an attempt to break the deadlock.
Then, as so often happens at Danie Craven, it was a case of ‘break us down if you can’ from the KZN-based outfit, who defended in numbers, pressed high and were committed to their game plan.
The Team of Choice began the second-half by noticeably moving the ball quicker in attack.
But as the game wore on, the Cape Town-based side showed signs of causing upset for the visitors and Maritzburg resolve increased, however, that much-needed magic slice of luck to break through just didn’t look like happening.
In the dying minutes of the game, Thabiso Kutumela’s cross in the 18 area was met with Junior Leandro Mendieta’s hand which resulted to a penalty.
Kutumela stepped up to take the penalty and converted it as he led the Blue Army to the promised land in the 90+2 minutes.
The victory sees Maritzburg sit 13th on the log standings with 24 points from 23 outings, while Stellies are placed 12th on the table with 25 points after 25 games.
