Bafana Bafana striker Evidence Makgopa has described scoring a brace on his debut for the senior national team as a moment he would cherish for the rest of his life.
Makgopa, together with Bongokuhle Hlongwane who also scored on his debut, join the list of players who have scored during their first outing for the national team who include the late John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu, Rudolph Seale, Doctor Khumalo, Jabu Mahlangu, Katlego Mphela, Mpho Makola to mention but a few.
The 21-year-old old who came in as a second half substitute scored in the 62nd minute as well as in the 82nd minute to help Bafana defeat the Uganda Cranes 3-2 at Orlando Stadium on Thursday night.
Makgopa was only called in the team two days before the match alongside teammate, Denwin Farmer, Njabulo Ngcobo of Swallows and TS Galaxy’s Ethan Brooksas as replacements for players who were ruled out due to Covid-19.
“To be honest I had a sleepless night (last night) because my heart was full of joy,” Makgopa tells FARPost.
“Although it feels like a dream, I knew this will happen if I were to be given a chance at Bafana,” said the media shy lanky striker.
The reigning DStv Premiership Young Player of the season has also shared what went through his mind the moment he was introduced into the field by Interim coach Helman Mkhalele.
“I told myself that ‘just be yourself boy, you can do this, now it’s time to show the nation that you are a real deal’. Everyone was happy for me in camp, I honestly enjoyed every minute at Bafana Bafana and I will cherish that moment forever,” he added.
