Ghana’s number one Richard Ofori insists that he is not eyeing the Goalkeeper of Season award claiming that his number one priority and focus is to help Maritzburg United to succeed.
With 10 clean sheets in 22 Absa Premiership matches, Ofori is second on the list of goalkeepers with the most clean sheets this season, behind SuperSport United’s Ronwen Williams.
However, Williams has played two more matches than the Maritzburg’s captain, Ofori.
“I don’t think about goalkeeper of the season, I just think about the team, doing well in the League,” said the 26-year-old shot-stopper.
“Because at the end of the day we are playing for this crest, which is Maritzburg United. Before individual awards, the most important thing is that the team is doing well. Anything else will come later. I don’t think about the best goalkeeper, I just do my best.”
“As a goalkeeper, you need to always aim for clean sheets because then possibility of your team winning a game is like 70 per cent,” added Ghanaian international.
Maritzburg are fourth on the log standings with 39 points after 24 matches, 10 wins, 9 draws and 5 losses.
‘The Team of Choice’ have conceded the second least number of goals this season with 17 in 24 League games, joint with Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits. Mamelodi Sundowns have conceded the least – 15.
“I always say this League [PSL] is one of the best for goalkeepers. You’ll see goalkeepers who are either second choice or first choice for his country. That lets everyone in the world know that this League has quality, “concluded Ofori.
