Tau speaks out on future

It has been an interesting few years for Bafana Bafana forward, Percy Tau.

He has made considerable progress since leaving Mamelodi Sundowns to join English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

For a few seasons Tau has been forced to go out on several loan spells becuase of work permit restrictions in England and he is now on his third in Belgium, where he has played for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the 2018/19 season, Club Brugge in the 2019/20 season and now he is with giants RSC Anderlecht where he has hit the ground running under Vincent Kompany.

Speaking to the media before jetting off to Port Elizabeth for South Africa’s second game against Sao Tome ePrincipe, Tau said he will only focus on his craft as the situation with the work permit still remains unclear.

I’m not aware, I’m not aware about when I will be able to return to Brighton. I think I’ve been doing well, I’ve been trying my best every time. For sure I’ve been on loan for three years and I think there’s been progress in my game. I went to Brugge and won the league so I don’t see issues with that,” said Tau.

He clarified that not being able to play in England has merely been due to the strict restrictions and nothing else. “I’ve always said there have been issues that were forcing me out, it was never about talent or belief, so we will have to see when it does happen. But I have to keep working hard.”

Tau is one of the overseas-based players in the Bafana camp and he emphasised the importance of having players doing well abroad as it gives hope and inspiration to some of the players who dream of playing overseas one day.

“It is very important, it also gives hope to local guys because they also have a chance to grow and also believe they can go overseas as well,” he continued.

Bafana Bafana are in Port Elizabeth and currently preparing to host Sao Tome ePrincipe in the second of two back-to-back AFCON qualifiers. Bafana Bafana won the first game 2-0 in Durban.

Kick off for this afternoon clash is 15:00.
