After a decision to immediately cancel the Portuguese Segunda Liga was taken last week by the Portuguese football governing body, it was also decided to promote the top two teams and relegate the bottom two.
Thabo Cele’s Cova Di Piedade was one of the bottom two teams to be relegated to the third division with Casa Pia and the midfielder has spoken about this development expressing his sadness.
“It is sad to be honest because we still had a lot of games to play. We started the second half of the season very, very well I was playing 90 minutes at every game. We felt we had a fighting chance to push for survival but it’s one of those situations it happens in life we can’t control it,” Cele explained to FARPost.
“No one expected the coronavirus to hit the world so hard and such circumstances are also brought by this abnormal situation we have found ourselves in.”
Cele has played in the third tier before with Real SC who have now been promoted to the second division for next season after finishing second in the third tier.
But the midfielder has hopes for better opportunities moving forward.
“Yeah look I have one year left on my contract with Piedade and with this situation I must sit down and think hard about what I’m going to do for my future I need to accept and make a decision about my future.”
It remains unknown where the KZN academy graduate will be next season, but at the age of 23 and having played in the Portuguese lower leagues for the past 4 seasons a move to the top division would be ideal for him moving forward.
