Gavin Hunt will be as busy as a bee in trying to keep the trigger happy and notorious Chippa United owner Siviwe Mpengesi patient if the desired results are not immediately coming as Mpengesi is renowned for showing coaches the exit door regularly.

However, Hunt, who was appointed as the new Chippa head coach on Wednesday said that he is up for the challenge and looking forward to leading ‘The Chilli Boys’ in the upcoming 2021/22 DStv Premiership season.

The former Kaizer Chiefs mentor is undoubtedly one of the most successful local coaches ever having won the four league titles previously with Bidvest Wits (1) and SuperSport United (3).

In his most recent coaching gig, he guided Chiefs to their first-ever Caf Champions League semifinal. But the 56-year-old was fired due to the Soweto giants’ poor domestic league form despite only being in charge for just eight months at Naturena.

Chiefs have since qualified for the Caf Champions League final, where they will face Al Ahly and also sealed a top-eight finish on the last day of the season under the leadership of Arthur Zwane.

Hunt will begin preparing the Eastern Cape club with immediate effect after putting pen to paper on a two-year contract.

“I see this as a massive challenge, and one that really excites me. The Eastern Cape as a region is where so many fantastic South African sportsmen and women hail from and this area certainly deserves a successful Football Club that the locals can be proud of,” said Hunt.

The former ‘Amakhosi’ coach believes that Chippa have some very good players currently and with the addition of a few more, the club will be very competitive.

“The facilities here are outstanding and the passion of the people, both in the province and at the club is amazing. I can’t wait to start working again,” he added.

Hunt will be joined at Chippa by Roy Limongelli who was with him at Bidvest Wits FC. Limongelli will fulfil an administrative role supporting the coach. His assistants will be announced in due course.
