Despite only finding the back of the net eight times and with four assists to his name in 71 appearances in all competitions for Orlando Pirates, Ndumiso Mabena believes that he didn’t fail at the club but gained experienced which is working for him at Bloemfontein Celtic.
Mabena left Pirates back in 2014 having won two Absa Premiership titles with the club and several cup competitions and joined Platinum Stars where he found his scoring boots and got his groove back– playing in over 90 matches and scoring 23 goals and providing 14 assists before he decided to put pen to paper with ‘Siwelele’.
In his first two season at Celtic, Mabena scored 10 goals and provided eight assists which is more than his overall tally of goals and assists at Pirates in five seasons.
“But I gained a lot of experience, and that experience is working for me now. I am still the same player with a lot of experience hence my form,” he said.
The Mpumalanga-born player has been an instrumental player the Lehlohonolo Seema coached Celtic side netting seven goals with three assists in 21 League games.
“If you look at the positions as well, I’m playing the same position as I was playing at Platinum Stars. At Pirates, I played in a different position,” added Mabena.
“Mabena is class, what a player. He is ageing but he is intelligent…he is brilliant. He can play as a number 10 and as a number 9. He is the boss there [at Celtic], they leave him to do what he wants.
“Everybody marks for him and they keep him fresh and rested. You can see why they do that because he is so classy and intelligent,” once said Mosimane.
