I’d go with Khune in the final, says Zimba

African Wanderers legend and goalkeeper coach at KZN goalkeeper Academy Sipho Zimba believes Kaizer Chiefs’ technical team has a tough task ahead of themselves, in selecting the goalkeeper for their clash against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League final tonight.

Chiefs have three capable goalkeepers in Daniel Akpeyi, Itumeleng Khune and Bruce Bvuma, who have all contributed to the team’s road to the final.

Zimba, who is a known expert in goalkeeping as he conducts workshops around KwaZulu Natal, tells FARPost that there are many factors to consider before you decide which keeper starts, but he believes Khune should start.

“It depends on the day on the technical staff, the goalkeeper coach and head coach on which goalkeeper are they going to play on the day,” he said.

“As per my experience, you need to have your number one goalkeeper and number two, so I think the technical staff of Kaizer Chiefs will have to consider all those elements.

“Myself I’d use Khune, he is the one who can play, if I were to choose for them. But now the question remains, is he ready to play?

“Because if you talk about Akpeyi, we talk about the performance of the previous game, how did he play, how did he perform,” emphasized Zimba.

“They are going to play against Al Ahly, are they going to face crossballs, is the goalkeeper ready psychologically and mentally and tactically is he ready?

“Is he ready for all the awareness aspects of goalkeeping in the modern day? This also depends on the previous game, the goalkeeper that has played.

“So I’m not taking away Khune’s talent as Mzansi’s number one goalkeeper and also Akpeyi. But when you talk about Mzansi goalkeeper you talk about Khune.

“He is our local goalkeeper, that’s why they call him Mzansi’s number one goalkeeper, but it rests with the technical staff of the team,” added Zimba.
