I’m very proud of the team – Hugo Broos

Coach Hugo Broos is very proud after defeating Ghana on Monday evening.

The Belgian mentor got his first win as the new head coach of South Africa and it came against one of the strongest countries in the continent.

Broos was appointed in May, but he only started working in August after initially returning to his native Belgium for Covid-19 vaccination.

The 1996 African champions started the World Cup qualifiers with a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe in Harare last Friday before defeating the Black Stars 1-0 at the FNB Stadium.

South Africa should have taken the lead in the first half, but Percy Tau’s goal was wrongly disallowed for offside.

Evidence Makgopa thought he had opened the scoring deep into the second half, but he missed an open net from close range.

Bafana Bafana kept on piling the pressure on the visitors and they were rewarded when Maritzburg United attacker Bongokuhle Hlongwane opened the scoring with seven minutes left on the clock.

Speaking to the media after the game, the 69-year-old said his players have made him very proud after showing such great fighting spirit.

“I’m very proud and happy today with what I saw on the pitch of my team.

“We have made big progress in one week. When I saw my team play in Zimbabwe there was no confidence, no determination, no belief in themselves, but I saw a team with lots of confidence today.

“We played a very good game. There was determination. There was the will to win, there was discipline and that is what I like.

“We have four points from six now. A few days ago I said if we get four from six I’d be happy, but I thought that we could win in Zimbabwe and play a draw against Ghana. But it’s the opposite now and I’m not unhappy about that.

“We will see, if we can go on like this and make progress like we did this week, we will see where we are at the end of the race.”

With this win, South Africa moved to the top of Group G after two games.

Ethiopia will take on Zimbabwe on Tuesday in their second group game.
