Impact of Performance Analysis in the PSL


Football ramifications and trends have continued to soar, and whilst others dramatically infringe on the progress of the game, some contribute effectively.

One such area is Performance Analysis, that is simply the systematic recording, breakdown and analysis of football (sports) from a video perspective.

FARPost Technical Study Group (TSG) looks at performance analysis and its impact on the PSL club’s and their success.

1. What is Performance Analysis?

Over the past two decades, forward thinking teams around the world, especially in the European leagues have embraced performance analysis. According to the website, Performance Analysis is a specialised discipline that provides athletes and coaches with objective information that helps them understand performance.

This process is underpinned by systematic observation, which provides valid, reliable and detailed information relating to performance.

2. Branches of performance analysis

Key disciplines around performance analysis include; video analysis, match analysis, opposition analysis and tactical scouting.

• Video Analysis

This area includes the video recording of all facets of the game. It summarily picks important football happenings from attack, defense and transition.

• Match Analysis

Match analysis deals with specific events within the match, that invariably interest the technical team. Although it’s based on the attack, defense and transition patterns, it goes further to heighten the areas like set play and tactical entries into important zones.

• Opposition and tactical scouting

Some teams like Mamelodi Sundowns and Manchester City, invest heavily on the process of opposition and tactical scouting.

The Sundowns scout, Goolam Valoodia is typical opposition and tactical scout who specializes in the full breakdown and in-depth analysis of the opposition in Africa.

3. PSL teams and performance analysis

Besides Sundowns, the majority of the PSL franchise clubs in both the DSTV Premiership and GladAfrica Championship utilizes performance analysts.

Nkululeko Malgas (University of Pretoria) is the living performance guru in the NFD. Malgas analyzes opposition for the University team but is also the NFD player encyclopedia.

Mark Davy (Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana) is the two time Premiership winner with Stuart Baxter during his coaching stinct with Amakhosi.

4. Serial success

Sundowns analysts Mario Masha, Goolam Valoodia and Musi Matlaba, who has since joined Al Ahly.

Perhaps the biggest impact of performance analysis can be magnified with the tactical scouts at Sundowns. During his long spell at the club, Coach Pitso Mosimane utilized the services of Valoodia, Musi Matlaba, Walter Steenbok and Mario Masha as his back room analysts for different missions.

These guys helped Coach Pitso dissect opposition in the PSL and Africa, and delivered five PSL titles and the maiden CAF Champions League in 2016.
