Banyana Banyana midfielder Leandra Smeda has expressed joy about getting her first 90 minutes in Portugal.
The midfielder was given her first top flight start on Sunday afternoon and played the whole 90 minutes in the defensive midfield role.
Famalicao ran out as 3-1 winners against Maritimo as the Championship play-offs continued in the Campeonato Nacional Feminino.
Smeda said it was absolutely amazing to finally earn a spot in the starting line up after weeks of fighting and training hard to get the opportunity. The 31-year-old is aiming to fight to keep her place for the rest of the season as she battles for league glory in her first season with the club.
“It felt really good to start and play 90 minutes. The Coach was happy with my performance,” she explained.
“For me it’s a good confidence booster going forward. The second half of the season is tough since it’s the championship play-offs. For me the aim is to stay consistent in my performances every time I get a chance to play and help my team get good results,” she added.
This is the anchor’s third season in Europe after previously being in the books of Lithuanian Premier League side Gintra Universitetas and Swedish Dammallsvenkan side Vittsjo GIK.
Smeda joined the Portuguese outfit and she has gone on to make three appearances for the club. Famalicao currently has four points from two play-off games played while Benfica sits comfortably at the top of the table with a 100% record after the same number of games.
On Sunday afternoon, Famalicao travel to struggling Condeixa for match day three of the play-off round and the South African midfielder will be hoping for another start to build on her performance from Sunday.
Famalicao has a mountain to climb with fixtures against Sporting Lisbon, SC Braga and SL Benfica still to come.
