KZN Academy graduate Sibusiso Shibane has started life on a high with his new club Agueda in the Portuguese third tier.
The 21-year-old has had an interesting journey since leaving the academy in 2017. He left to go on trial at Vitoria Setubal who signed him to join their U19 development squad, but a year later he moved to top-flight side Portimonense to play with the U23 side.
‘Mabulala’ scored 11 goals in the 2018/19 season before leaving the coastal club to join third division side Agueda on loan in search of first team football in January 2019, staying at the club for the remainder of the season.
On the 20th of June 2020 Agueda decided to make the striker’s stay at the club permanent signing him from Portimonense.
Shibane has hit the ground running at his new home scoring 4 goals in 7 appearances for the lower tier side. The attacker recently proved his quality two weeks ago against Valadares when he scored a goal and assisted a further strike as Agueda won 5-2 in the Campeonato de Portugal.
The striker spoke to this publication a few weeks ago and said that his target is scoring 10 league goals this season with a goal of attracting interest from clubs in the country’s Primeira Liga.
Speaking to FARPost on his progress so far and how his stay at Agueda has been so far ‘Mabulala’ said that he feels at home and has been doing well.
“When I took a decision to leave a team at a higher level to join a team that is two divisions down, I wanted to play every week while improving my game;” said Shibane.
“I’m now six goals shy of reaching my target of 10 league goals as I said earlier this year. I’m positive that this is a special season for me,” he concluded.
Agueda was not in action last weekend because of the Portuguese Cup, but this coming Saturday they travel away to Canelas 2010 as they hope to continue their recent run of form.
