KRC Genk striker Paul Onuachu has expressed his delight after netting for Nigeria this past weekend.
The 27-year-old scored the only goal of the game to help the Super Eagles overcome a stubborn Benin Republic and book their spot at the 2021 Afcon. Just when Benin thought they had done enough to secure a point, Onuachu netted in additional time to seal three crucial points for the three-time African champions.
Nigeria needed three points from their remaining two qualifiers and Gernot Rohr will be pleased to have achieved that before their last group game against Lesotho on Tuesday in the city of Lagos.
Onuachu has netted 27 goals in all competitions for Genk this season and he leads the goal scoring charts in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
“I’m happy to have scored the match-winner for the team in Cotonou. I’ve worked very hard to get here. It’s like a long road, but I’m very happy to be here and to get the opportunity and the goal.
“I want to do more like I have been doing with my club this season. It has always been my dream to score for Nigeria in games and I want to do that regularly when I get an invitation to represent my fatherland. I hope to get another chance to prove my worth again.”
Coincidentally, the forward was initially left out of the squad by Rohr, but the withdrawal of FC Nantes winger Moses Simon saw him being drafted into the team and he repaid the coach’s trust with a big goal. Many fans stood by the forward asking for his inclusion in the team because of the great season he is having in Belgium.
Nigeria will now prepare to host Lesotho at home in a dead rubber encounter. They finished third in Afcon 2019 in Egypt.
