Iwobi cleared to play Nigeria’s Lesotho tie

Everton forward Alex Iwobi has been cleared to feature for the Super Eagles after missing their game against Benin Republic on Saturday due to a positive Covid-19 result.

Iwobi was a doubt for the final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Thabo Senong-coached Lesotho on Tuesday afternoon [5pm].

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the development via its official twitter account just hours before the dead rubber tie set for the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

NFF questioned Saturday’s Covid-19 positive test, and had a re-test done on Iwobi in Lagos, which came back negative. “Update: @NGSuperEagles forward, @alexiwobi has tested negative after further COVID-19 tests were conducted,” the tweet read.

The federation further tweeted that the new result means Iwobi is eligible to play a part in the game against Likuena. The Eagles, who have already qualified for the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, return to Lagos for the first time in 20 years.

On Saturday, the former Arsenal attacker had to be replaced by Galatasaray’s Henry Onyekuru in the game that ended 1-0 in favour of the Eagles.

The Super Eagles scored their goal through Paul Onuachu, ending Benin’s eight-year unbeaten run at home.
