Kaitano Tembo: SuperSport will delay Sundowns’ title celebrations

SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo says they will fight to delay Mamelodi Sundowns’ Premier League title celebrations when they clash in a derby on Wednesday at Loftus Stadium [17h00].

Tembo vowed they will not have their city rivals wrap up the coveted League title at their expense.

A win for the Brazilians will secure their fourth consecutive League title. Second placed AmaZulu are the only team that stands a mathematical chance to win the title.

They trail Sundowns, who just need three points to wrap it up, by seven points with three games left.

“We are playing against a very good team, a team that’s got a lot to play for. They want to wrap it up. I don’t think we can allow that to happen at our expense. There’s always something to play for in a derby. We’re in a position to match them toe-to-toe,” Tembo told FARPost.

Going into the tie, Matsatsantsa will be buoyed by their recent win against TTM that came after a 10-match winless streak.

“We have had a very difficult time in terms of the last 10 games where we didn’t get the results we wanted. In our last game against TTM we picked up a morale-boosting win,” Tembo said in a telephonic interview.

SuperSport have had a 14-day break since their last game while their crosstown rivals have been busy in the Caf Champions League.

Sundowns travelled to Cairo for their quarterfinal tie against Al Ahly on 15 May before hosting the reigning African champions in Pretoria on Saturday. The South African champions were knocked out of the competition after a 3-1 aggregate loss.

“We’ve had enough time to rest, it helped but at the same time coming off a good win against TTM we needed to continue with the momentum. With this break you don’t really know how you’re going to fare because of the break,” Tembo told SuperSport’s media.

He, however, said preparations had been good, adding players were looking forward to the derby. Tembo insists they want to finish as high as they can.

“It’s a derby and derbies you cannot really predict in terms of results. In terms of performance both teams are looking forward to the game and it’s a game where players don’t really need motivation because it’s a derby.

“We are in a situation whereby we want to try and finish our season very strong. They are in a position where they can win the League with a win against us. There’s a lot to play for.”
