Recently departed Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande feels he was sometimes made a scapegoat by the club’s supporters when the team was not doing well, only because he had been at the club for a long time.
Chiefs opted not to renew Katsande’s contract upon its expiry this month.
The 35-year-old joined Amakhosi in 2011 from Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) and holds the record of being the most capped foreigner with 326 official matches for the club.
The former Zimbabwean international had a love-hate relationship with the club’s supporters during the 10 years stay.
Speaking to television news channel Newzroom Afrika on Wednesday, Katsande said Chiefs supporters need to be more proud of players because they always give their all.
“I know that I am a guy who divided the attention in terms of the feelings about me,” he said.
“If I can tell you, my daughter and son are old enough to read about what (people) are saying about their father. So, my message to the supporters is like, they need to be more proud of their players because at the end of the day are working in the field to give their all, serving Kaizer Chiefs supporters with every inch of their body.
“For me, I feel like supporters were too harsh to me because they were expecting me to do much but if you are to analyze my position, as Willard Katsande, what I have offered to the team in each and every game – win, lose or draw – you would never falter my commitment. I always take my job serious but at the end of the day when the team loses, ‘It’s Katsande, he must go’,” he added.
“Obviously now Katsande is not there. I want to see what is going to be the next reaction if things don’t go well, because at the end of the day, we tend to give an eye to the older guys or the long-serving players to say they’re the reason why we are not doing well. But if you are to say the contribution, you could see that the contribution of Katsande is as good as a 23-year-old but because I have been there for long, it is easy to say Katsande this and Katsande that.”
This publication has it on good authority that the player is likely to stay at Chiefs in a different capacity with an announcement expected soon.
