Hlompho Kekana is one of the most successful captains in Mamelodi Sundowns history and has shown great professionalism and leadership both on and off the field.
Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi hailed Kekana, saying that “the skipper is one boy that deserves everything that comes his way because he is a true professional.”
“The guy works very hard and is very committed to the game, I don’t know any life that Hlompho Kekana lives except football,” added the Sundowns mentor.
The man affectionately known as “KK” and “Bra Hlompho” has been nominated for the prestigious Fifa Puskas Award once again. This time around it was for his thunderous strike against Cape Town City on August 20 last 2020.
Kekana got nominated for the award in 2016 but Malaysian striker Mohd Faiz Subri walked away with the award. The winner of the 2020 best goal will be announced at the awards ceremony in Zurich on December 17.
Mngqithi strongly believes that Kekana, who has had an astonishing career deserves to win the Puskas award. “It never comes better than that it always has to be a Hlompho Kekana goal and it is a show stopper,” he said.
“It will be very sad to me if Hlompho does not get such recognition because if you were to look at the goals that Hlompho has scored, goals that are of the same magnitude as the goal that has taken him to this Puskas award.
“It is one of those goals that win you matches, so when he gets this recognition, for me it feels very good because it sends a very good message to everyone out there that if you are committed to the game and you give it its best, the game will also reward you.
“I just wish Hlompho can win one of these awards, more especially the Puskas award because it is not the first time he gets this nomination. I wish so because it will also speak volumes to the landscape of the SA game if he can get this award. After all, he has been very instrumental for us,” added Mngqithi.
