Kessie fires Ivory Coast past Saudi Arabia

Ivory Coast collected maximum points with a 2-1 victory against Saudi Arabia in their opening Group D game.

Saudi Arabia’s Abdulelah Al-Amri scored an own goal in the 39th minute before Salem Al-Dawsari equalised for the Asian nation in the 44th minute.

After a period of dominance, AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie handed the African nation the win with a 66th minute goal before they were reduced to 10 men with Huesca anchor Aboubacar Doumbia sent off in the seventh minute of added time.

Manchester United duo Amad Diallo and Eric Bailly played the entire game for Ivory Coast with Diallo laying the assist for Kessie’s goal.

Earlier, Egypt and Spain shared the points after a 0-0 draw in their opening Group C game.

In the other Group C game, Australia stunned Argentina 2-0 to go to the top of the standings. In Group D, Brazil defeated Germany 4-2 to top the Group with Ivory Coast in second place.
