Banyana Banyana forward Thembi Kgatlana was on target for Spanish Primera Division side Eibar as they beat Sevilla 1-0 on Thursday night.
The 24-year-old has started life on a high since moving from Portugal at the beginning of the 2020/21 season.
She has scored four league goals and assisted another two strikes in eight games for Eibar this season. The former SL Benfica star came off the bench after 59 minutes and her influence was immediately felt up front with Eibar creating more chances in the last 30 minutes of the game.
With only three minutes left on the clock the game seemed to be heading for a goalless draw until the South African popped up in the box and danced her way around defenders before slotting home a beautifully placed ball into the far post.
She is seemingly the ‘ace’ up the sleeve for coach Jon Gallego who has been using her in different roles since her arrival in the recent transfer window.
Last weekend, Eibar lost 4-2 at home against Deportivo de la Coruna and the attacker assisted both goals for the home side, her influence in the team has grown immensely.
It has been quite a journey for the former CAF Women’s Footballer of the Year, since moving to her first club abroad Houston Dash in the US where she made a name for herself under the mentorship of coach Vera Pauw.
The move to America opened doors for her to switch to China to join Beijing BG Phoenix where she scored six goals in ten league games to help Phoenix finish in the top half of the table.
Her exploits in the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations led to wide-spread interest in her services and Portuguese giants SL Benfica snapped her up before she made a move to Eibar where she is shining amongst the best players in the world.
South Africa’s participation in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup has opened up doors for many footballers to move abroad and Kgatlana is one of those players.
